                                              CONGRATULATIONS!

Introducing the beautiful new St. Francis of Assisi sculpture in The Canticle of the Creatures Meditation Garden at Lourdes Hospital Camden, NJ!

When the beautiful tulip tree in the center of the Canticle of the Creatures Meditation Garden started to die, Sr. Marianne Hieb had a vision. She would not just let the tree go, but spare much of it so that it may be reborn in a new light. And so began the work that came to completion this week in a form beyond anyone's greatest imagination.

In just two days, through the talented hands of Brian Ackley of Ackmonster Chainsaw Art we were able to take the remaining trunk of the tulip tree and transform it into a visionary sculpture of St. Francis of Assisi. The vision and work of the two artists' collaboration could not have revealed itself in more beautiful form.

Chapter 2012 Courageous Women Incarnating the Christ

As I reflect on the theme for Chapter 2012, I keep thinking [about] how much courage it takes to incarnate the Christ in this 21st century, which has become so secularized.  I believe we are living in a world not unlike the world in which Francis and Clare grew up, but somehow, we are fighting very different forces. Francis and Clare did what was theirs to do in their time and made a significant impact on the world...                                                                                          Judith Terrameo, OSF

House Blessing at St. Elizabeth's Convent in Tampa

St. Elizabeth’s newly-renovated house of prayer and assisted living facility was the scene of a special prayer service on January 22, attended by the sisters in the Tampa Bay area, Sisters Avril and J. Miriam, our employees and some of their family members, representatives from Hoffman, Haverty Furniture, Vogel Brothers Construction and friends of the sisters.  As guests arrived, they were given tours of the renovated areas, then invited to gather in the chapel for a lovely prayer service. At the end of the service in the chapel, Fr. George Corrigan, OFM, accompanied by Betty Moore and John Francis Coyle (residents at St. Elizabeth’s), blessed each room in the convent.  A wonderful reception followed. The convent now meets all the requirements for an assisted living facility—a mandate of our 2008 Chapter.

Sisters sing the Franciscan Blessing over those who were involved in the renovation.

Allegany Franciscan Ministries Awards $4.5 Million in Grants

taken from a press release submitted by Eileen Coogan Boyle, President/CEO

The Board of Trustees of Allegany Franciscan Ministries recently awarded grants totaling $4,535,000 to 83 nonprofit community organizations. Most of the projects funded are located in the six Florida counties served by Allegany Franciscan Ministries. With these recent grants, Allegany Franciscan Ministries has provided $5.6M in total to community organizations in 2011, and $60M since 1998.

“These grants will help create healthier communities by supporting efforts that positively impact the health of individuals, families, and communities, and improve access to health services for marginalized, vulnerable or underserved people,” said Eileen Coogan Boyle, President/CEO. “Many of our grant partners have faced decreased contributions and cuts in other funding sources over the last few years and we are grateful to have the means to make these significant financial investments to improve the health of our community.

The overall intent of Allegany Franciscan Ministries’ grants in 2011 was to increase access to health services and improve the overall health status of underserved communities.  Strategies and funding priorities in 2011 included community education and outreach, health care services and basic needs, increased capacity and coordination of the healthcare delivery system, and advocacy and community mobilization.
